The comment LINK strategy for Instagram Reels, step by step

Kundan Kumar

Founder, Plugio

At the end of a Reel, most creators say the same thing: "link in bio". To use it, a viewer has to stop watching, open your profile, find the link among your others and tap it. Every extra step is a chance for someone to give up. We don't have a number for how many do, and we won't invent one. The point is simpler: you can remove most of those steps.

What the strategy is

Instead of sending people to your bio, you ask them to comment one word. When they do, they get a public reply and a DM with your link, and they never leave Instagram. That's the whole idea. The rest of this guide is how to do it well.

Before you start

  • An Instagram Professional account (Business or Creator) linked to a Facebook Page. That is Meta's requirement for automation.
  • Your Instagram connected to Plugio through Meta's official login screen.
  • Something worth sending: a product, a booking page, a free guide or your portfolio.
  • A Reel that is likely to reach people who actually want that thing.

Step 1: Pick the keyword

  • One word, easy to type. GUIDE, CHECKLIST, TEMPLATE or LINK work. A phrase is easier to mistype or have autocorrected.
  • Specific to the offer. If the Reel is about a checklist, ask for CHECKLIST. It tells people what they're getting.
  • Not a word people already say. If you choose something like "love", the rule will react to ordinary comments. Choose a word nobody would write by accident.
  • One keyword per Reel. Two rules on the same Reel makes it hard to read the results.

Step 2: Ask for the comment inside the Reel

Say it out loud, show it on screen and repeat it in the caption. Always say what they will get. "Comment GUIDE and I'll send you the checklist" works because the reward is clear. "Comment below" does not.

Step 3: Write the public reply

The public reply is what everyone else scrolling the comments sees, so it should look like you, not like a machine. Write a few short variations and let the rule rotate through them, using the person's name where you can.

  • "Sent it to your DMs, Priya."
  • "Check your DMs, Priya, it's on its way."
  • "Done, Priya. Have a look in your messages."

Step 4: Write the DM

The DM should do four things: say why they're getting it, deliver exactly what you promised, include one link, and invite a reply. Keep it short.

Step 5: Decide where the link goes

  • A product if you want a sale. The DM can link to a product in your Plugio store.
  • A booking page if you sell paid sessions.
  • Your portfolio if the goal is brand enquiries.
  • A free gift first. You can ask for an email before the link, or unlock the link after a follow, and then offer something paid after.

Step 6: Set limits and switch it on

Set a daily message limit you can follow up on, decide whether you want quiet hours, and keep the pause button in mind. For the reasoning behind these settings, read how to do Instagram DM automation safely.

Reading the results

Each rule reports four things: comments caught, messages sent, link clicks and sales. Read them in order, because the first number that looks wrong tells you where to look:

What you seeWhat it usually meansWhat to try
Few comments caughtThe Reel isn't asking clearly, or isn't reaching the right peopleMake the ask louder in the Reel and the caption
Comments but few messages sentA limit, a setting or a permission is stopping itCheck the daily limit, the rule and your connection
Messages but few clicksThe DM is vague or the link feels unrelatedShorten it and state what the link is
Clicks but few salesThe page or price isn't convincingLook at the page itself, not the DM

Mistakes to avoid

  • Asking for a comment without saying what the person gets.
  • A DM that doesn't deliver what the Reel promised.
  • A keyword people use in normal comments.
  • Ignoring the people who reply to your DM. Answer them yourself.
  • Sending everyone to a page unrelated to the Reel.

Limits to know about

  • Comment-to-DM starts with Instagram. Facebook Page comments are next.
  • YouTube allows public replies only, with no DMs.
  • A rule only helps if the Reel brings the right people. It can't make a weak Reel perform.
  • We can't promise results. This removes friction; it doesn't create demand.

Questions

What keyword should I use?

One clear word that matches the offer, such as GUIDE or CHECKLIST, and that people wouldn't write by accident in an ordinary comment.

Do people have to follow me first?

Not by default. If you want, you can make the link unlock only after a follow.

Can the DM link to something I sell?

Yes. It can link to a product in your Plugio store, a booking page or your portfolio, and the rule reports clicks and sales.

Is it safe for my account?

It uses Meta's official APIs only, with daily limits, quiet hours and a pause button. No one can promise an account will never be restricted. The safety guide explains the settings in detail.
